Batteries

Batteries

In the late 1950’s the company began recycling automotive car batteries throughout New Zealand. Initially it collected batteries for the Amalgamated Battery Co in Christchurch, Chloride Batteries in Wellington and Lucas Industries in Auckland.

Batteries are purchased from members of the motor trade, battery retailers and other businesses that handle a lot of batteries. The automotive industry has confidence that Dominion Trading Co and its’ employees will handle the old batteries in a safe and secure manner. All drivers have the Hazardous Goods Endorsement on their licences.

Recent years saw the demise of New Zealand manufacturers of batteries. The last to close was Exide Technologies in Wellington in 2012. This has not seen any change in the company’s services and the scrap batteries are now exported under the terms of the Basel Convention to secondary lead recycling plants in the Pacific basin.

Batteries are purchased either on a unit basis or by weight, where the buyer has access to forklift and the quantity justifies it.

While the Company specialises in servicing commercial premises, in Christchurch the general public can bring their car batteries to 333 Blenheim Rd and receive payment.
